The risks of modular construction

Modular homes are rising in popularity, but their construction presents very different risks to that of traditional methods. Two experts break down the unique risk profile of modular construction.

Modular buildings can be safer, more environmentally sustainable and more affordable than their traditionally constructed counterparts.

They’re also becoming increasingly popular. The sector’s share of the construction market is predicted to rise from less than 5 per cent in 2018 to 15 per cent by 2025.

And as housing shortages bite in regional areas around Australia and New Zealand — and disaster-ravaged communities look for faster ways to rebuild — modular homes are emerging as a solid solution.

The construction process begins when sections, or modules, are fabricated in a factory or at another manufacturing site. These are then delivered to a location where the building is assembled into its final form.
