What can insurers learn from Māori experiences of insurance? Groundbreaking research combines industry perspectives, landholder insights and survey findings to identify systemic barriers and practical opportunities for meaningful change.
Understanding the insurance needs and experiences of Māori consumers is essential to building a more inclusive, responsive and trusted insurance industry in New Zealand.
New research from the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) provides unprecedented insights into the barriers and opportunities Māori face when accessing insurance, drawing on the experiences of almost 1,000 participants, including individuals, whānau, hapū and iwi leaders, governors of collectively owned land and Māori insurance professionals.
Conducted through the FMA’s Kaupapa Māori research programme, the study highlights the importance of addressing inequities, strengthening consumer outcomes and identifying opportunities for innovation.
For insurers, the findings offer valuable perspectives on how existing insurance products, services and engagement practices could better meet the needs of tangata whenua.
Titled FMA Experiences of tangata whenua with insurances, this report will help insurers understand the challenges, explore opportunities to improve accessibility and trust, and consider how their organisation can contribute to more equitable insurance outcomes for Māori communities.
