E-scooters are a handy way of getting around the city. However, they come with new risks that regulators and insurers are grappling with.
In April 2022, a pedestrian was hit from behind by an e-scooter rider in Melbourne.
Her injuries — including a fractured elbow and shoulder — led to a 12-day hospital stay and a A$15,000 medical bill.
E-scooter companies sometimes provide rider insurance, and you might expect it to cover these costs, but it doesn’t.
Because the rider was breaking the local e-scooter regulations, the accident isn’t insured and the pedestrian — or the rider personally — seem set to foot the bill.
