Just ask Bob King, one of Australia’s foremost authorities on insurance fraud investigation, who once cracked a case using a $2 magnifying glass and his own common sense. King recently put his expertise towards an ANZIIF professional development activity, Fraud Investigations Fundamentals.

He once used a cheap magnifying glass to solve a fraud case.
‘I was asked to investigate a suspicious claim for hail damage. I noticed that, upon magnification, the car body dents allegedly caused by hail displayed the appearance of a woven fabric pattern,’ he recalls.
King’s suspicion was corroborated by another expert who was able to confirm that the shape of the dents was uniform and displayed an arched angle, very different to how real hail would imprint a car body.
