Cancer accounts for a high percentage of insurance claims. By motivating policyholders to adopt healthier behaviours, insurers are working to improve customers’ lives, reduce costs and provide a more complete service.
Cancer touches the lives of countless families every day, bringing not just medical challenges but also emotional and financial strain.
In New Zealand, 71 people are diagnosed with cancer every day. Cancer is also the leading cause of death and serious illness.
It follows that the 2024 AIA NZ Claims Compass report found that, across all of AIA New Zealand’s insurance products, cancer is the top claims diagnosis and accounts for the highest volume of claims.
In Australia, the story is much the same. Zurich’s 2024 Cost of Care report reveals that cancer continues to be the leading reason for claims related to death, terminal illness, and health trauma for both men and women. It also represented the highest average claim amount at A$187,000.
Cancer is a significant and deeply personal challenge for many Australians, accounting for 17 per cent of the total disease burden, with an average lifetime cost to manage the condition of A$65,000.
Cancer and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are having a significant social and economic impact on individuals, families and the community.
“Both Zurich’s claims data and Cost of Care analysis highlight a growing need for Australians to prioritise resilience and prevention across their health and finances,” says Matt Paterson, chief claims officer at Zurich.
